New Centre for Liveable Cities set up to enhance Singapore’s expertise on sustainable urban development
The Ministry of National Development (MND) and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources have jointly established the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) to enhance Singapore's expertise in urban development and management. This was announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the opening of the inaugural Singapore International Water Week, World Cities Summit and East Asia Summit Conference on Liveable Cities on 24 June 2008. The CLC will be part of MND initially and housed at the URA Centre.
The CLC will consolidate the knowledge and expertise among the public, private and people sectors in city development and management. It hopes to position itself as a centre of global excellence that brings together the best ideas and practices that support efforts in building liveable cities that are dynamic, vibrant, cohesive and sustainable.
The CLC's terms of reference are:
| - | To be the leading repository in Singapore for urban development and environmental management expertise in collaboration with the relevant agencies; |
|
- |
To build competencies and facilitate mindshare across the public, private and people sectors in the areas of liveability and sustainable development; |
|
- |
To undertake policy relevant research and foster local and international partnerships in areas of multi-disciplinary interest that require a whole-of-government approach; and |
|
- |
To share Singapore's experience in the area of urban and environmental sustainability with the international community. |
The Centre for Liveable Cities will be headed by Mr Andrew Tan, Director. Mr Tan is concurrently the Deputy Secretary (International) for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the establishment of the CLC, Mr Tan said, "This is a timely initiative. Over the years, Singapore has developed useful expertise in urban development and sound environmental management. With the rapid pace of urbanisation in the region, cities are facing unprecedented challenges amidst growing urban and environmental concerns. The Centre will distil and develop Singapore's expertise, while learning from others and sharing its best practices".
