IMCSD launches public consultation website

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Sustainable Development (IMCSD) has launched a new website, www.sustainablesingapore.gov.sg, to solicit input from the public on Singapore’s sustainable development for the next 10 to 15 years.

It forms part of the IMCSD’s efforts to engage the key stakeholders across the public, private and people sectors in drawing up the blueprint for Singapore’s sustainable development.  Earlier on, the IMCSD has identified three priority areas following a series of dialogue sessions with representatives from the private and people sectors - resource efficiency, pollution control, and the quality of the physical environment.

The IMCSD will take a strategic and long term perspective in coming up with its recommendations.  It is foreseen that efforts will be focused on encouraging people and businesses to adopt practices that are sustainable in the long term and developing new capabilities and technologies which optimise resources and improve environmental performance.  Measures to enhance sustainability such as improving resource efficiency could mean additional costs in the shorter term but are expected to result in cost-savings to businesses and individuals in the long run.

The IMCSD will be engaging leaders in non-governmental organizations as well as businesses in focus group discussions in the coming months to seek comments on specific issues being studied. The feedback and recommendations received will be factored into the IMCSD's deliberations before it releases its report next year, which will serve as the blueprint for Singapore to achieve its vision as a lively and liveable city.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Sustainable Development (IMCSD) was set up in February 2008 to formulate a clear national framework and strategy for Singapore’s sustainable development in the context of the emerging domestic and global challenges.

The IMCSD is co-chaired by the Minister of National Development Mr. Mah Bow Tan, and the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim.  The members are: The Minister for Finance Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, the Minister for Transport Mr. Raymond Lim, and Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry Mr. S Iswaran.
