Global Cities at a Time of Crisis

The Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) hosted its second public lecture featuring Professor Saskia Sassen on “Global Cities at a Time of Crisis” on 21 August 2009 at the MND Penthouse.
The lecture covered several major trends of shifting urban functions from a utilitarian city to that of a “strategic city” that began to emerge in the 1980s. Professor Sassen expounded on key ideas central to her research that revolves around the importance of differences between cities in this globalised world. Cashing in on our differences, cities can export these specialised knowledge accumulated from traditional niche economies. She also shared her views of the current financial crisis and its implications for cities based on her most recent research on the subject.
